Just four women in Delhi cabinet since 1993

Arvind Kejriwal along with his ministers took oath on Sunday
NEW DELHI: There have been just four women cabinet ministers in the city since 1993. And there was no addition to the tally when the new government took charge on Sunday.
Delhi, though, is among the only three states in the country, along with Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, to have seen two women chief ministers.
The four women cabinet ministers in Delhi were BJP’s Purnima Sethi (1998), Congress’ Krishna Tirath (1998-2001) and Kiran Walia (2008-13) and AAP’s Rakhi Bidlan (2013-14). Of these, only Walia who remained a cabinet minister for a short period has completed her term in the office.
Between 1993 and 2020, of the 39 women elected to the House, 20 were from Congress, 17 from AAP and two from BJP.
In the Lok Sabha too, women representation from Delhi has been low, with eight of the 17 elections seeing only one woman MP from the city’s seven parliamentary constituencies. From the 1999 Lok Sabha election, this has been the pattern, with one woman MP in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. The city did not elect any woman candidate six times, and has thrice elected more than one.
