NEW DELHI: Two men on their way to allegedly extort money from a trader at the Okhla mandi were killed in an encounter with the special cell in the early hours of Monday near Pul Prahladpur in south Delhi.
Following a tip-off, police spotted Rafiq and Ramesh on a motorcycle around 5.51am and asked them to surrender. But the men tried to flee and allegedly opened fire at the cops, who fired back. A huge cache of arms, including pistols and ammunition of different bores, were found on them.
As the men reportedly tried to speed away, the cops blocked their way due to which the bike skidded and both fell on the road. Instead of surrendering, both Rafiq and Ramesh whipped out pistols and started firing at the police team. Five of the shots hit four cops, all of whom were saved due to bullet-proof jackets. A police Gypsy was also damaged.
When the cops retaliated, Rafiq and Ramesh were hit on the chest, back and the legs. They were immediately taken to the AIIMS trauma centre but were declared dead on arrival.
Ramesh was using a 9mm pistol and Rafiq, a .30 bore one, said an officer. They were also found to be carrying a bag containing another .32 bore pistol and eight live rounds. Four pouches containing about 60 rounds of 7.62mm cartridges were also found on Rafiq. Police claimed the duo had been threatening several wholesale dealers in the Okhla mandi to extort money from them.
A probe revealed that Ramesh and Rafiq had killed Ramesh’s father over a property dispute, said a source. Rafiq was also involved in shooting at two cops and a property dealer in Karawal Nagar last week and then travelled to Loni to eliminate another property dealer for refusing to pay him protection money. Later that night, he killed Salman, who used to deal in real estate, in Loni.
Rafiq, who was involved in at least seven attempt-to-murder and murder cases, was earlier booked under the Gangster Act in Uttar Pradesh. Last year, he killed Kishor alias Langda from Karawal Nagar, with whom he was involved in a turf war. He was also wanted in the murder of a cricket bookie, Javed, in 2019.
