IGI up to 7th spot in terms of seats offered

MUMBAI: Delhi emerged as the seventh largest airport in the world in terms of seat capacity with 3 million seats offered on departing flights in February, a growth of 14% compared with February 2019, says the latest data from UK-based OAG.
Delhi airport had the second largest growth in seat capacity globally this month as airports like Beijing, Shanghai Pudong saw a sharp decline in seats offered due to the coronavirus impact. Without this, the airport wouldn’t have made it to the top 10 this month, because if data for the past 12 months leading up to February 2020 is considered, Delhi airport stands at number 16 globally with just 41 million seats.

The Airports Council International in its traffic report in September 2019 had put Delhi at number 12 for handling 69.9 million passengers in 2018. According to OAG data, the number of seats offered by Delhi airport grew by a modest 1.9% in the past 12 months as compared to the year before.
The coronavirus impact also made UAE-India the 6th largest “country pair” in the world in February 2020 with 1.78 million seats flown between the two countries at the expense of country-pairs like China-Thailand, Japan-South Korea that saw huge declines. India-UAE is 10th largest with 21 million seats when it comes to the past 12 months. The top country pair for February was Mexico-US with 3 million seats, while the top country pair for the past one year was Spain-UK.
The fastest growing country pair in the past 12 months was China-Japan with a growth of 38%, and in February 2020, it was South Korea-Vietnam with a 36% increase as carriers added nearly 300,000 seats, said OAG data.
IndiGo emerged the eight largest airline in the world in terms of number of flights operated; American Airlines came out on top with 2.3 million flights. Up to February 2020, IndiGo operated 5.3 lakh flights in the last 12 months, making its 20% growth the fastest in the world.
