Rajkot: The city police on Sunday arrested three persons for allegedly blackmailing and driving a 65-year-old man to suicide.
One of the three arrested is victim Dhanji Kasiyani’s live-in partner Jignasa Kundaria, University police station officials said.
Kasiyani had consumed poison on Saturday and died in the Rajkot Civil Hospital. After drinking poison, he reportedly went to Kundaria’s house in Ghanteshwar from where he was taken to hospital by Kundaria and his son Balkrushna.
Along with Kundaria, police arrested Chatur Shiyal (40) and Harjivan Aghera (46) on the complaint of Balkrushna.
“In his complaint, Balkrushna alleged that Kundaria had siphoned off Rs 25 lakh and a car from Kasiyani by blackmailing him. Kundaria used to threaten Kasiyani that she would defame him by exposing their relationship in the society. Shiyal and Aghera used to help her in the crime,” said R S Thakar, inspector with University police station.
Balkrushna also alleged that Kundaria had conned Kasiyani into signing ‘Maitri Karar’ (friendship contract) between them, giving a legal sanctity to their relationship.
Kasiyani had arrived in Rajkot from his native Jayava village of Dhrol taluka in Jamnagar district on Saturday afternoon, after which he made a call to his brother Shantilal.
“Shantilal made us listen to the audio clip of his telephonic conversation with Kasiyani in which Kasiyani was heard saying that he had fallen victim to blackmailing, that three blackmailers had siphoned off Rs 25 lakh from him, and that he had a live-in relationship with Kundaria,” said an official from University police station.
Kasiyani made his last call to Shantilal, saying that he had consumed poison. Shantilal called up Balkrushna who rushed to Rajkot from his native Jayava village. Balkrushna, who knew about Kasiyani’s relationship with Kundaria, went straight to her home in Ratnam Pride Residency near Ghanteshwer SRP Camp and found Kasiyani lying unconscious. Then both Vasiyani and Balkrushna rushed Kasiyani to the civil hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
In the audio clip, Kasiyani is heard accusing Kundaria of blackmailing him. Kasiyani said that Kundaria had already siphoned off Rs 25 lakh from him and was asking for more money, tired of which he had decided to end his life.
Kasiyani was a wealthy farmer in Jayava village.
