Berlin - He may be the most prolific try-scoring Springbok of all time, but on Saturday night in Berlin, Bryan Habana stepped out of his comfort zone in a big way.

In Germany for the Laureus World Sports Awards, set to be hosted on Monday night, Habana was unveiled as an official Academy member of the organisation.

As part of the Laureus Sport for Good campaign, Habana and a number of other Laureus Academy members and ambassadors visited an ice rink where a project called KICK on Ice is aimed at preventing children and adolescents from sliding into crime by offering sports activities and social education methods.

The project takes in struggling young people on a voluntary basis through cooperation with the Berlin police.

There are currently eight ice hockey teams that play in the KICK championship, and on Saturday they shared their rink with Habana and others, including Ukrainian pole-vaulting champion Sergey Bubka.

"I last think I came on the ice when I was a teenager," Habana told Sport24 while catching a breather from his session.

"I still can't stop, so if there is anyone in front of me, I do feel sorry for them."

Habana also praised the work done by the coaches at KICK on Ice.

"Laureus has supported this project since 2003 ... being able to see the charitable work they do is fantastic."

Habana will be in Berlin for the duration of the weekend and is hoping that the Springboks pick up the Team of the Year Award on Monday night.

The now retired Habana scored a staggering 67 tries from 124 Test matches between 2004 and 2016.
