Score well in English with proper time management

The paper of English (Std XII) is not a question paper now but an activity sheet. Despite the paper being lengthy, it is a scoring subject, provided students solve it in a systematic manner with proper time management.
Being the last batch, the students are lucky to face the previous year’s pattern. Start with reading out the question paper carefully. The activity sheet of Std XII (state board) will come in four set code (A, B, C, D). Each paper will consist of four sections i:e I, II. III & IV.
Section I deals with reading skills from prose. First seen passage will be of 12 marks with non-textual grammar of 3 marks, for a total of 15 marks. Second seen passage carries 12 marks plus 3 marks note (total 15 marks). Third one is the unseen passage, 12 marks with a summary writing of 3 marks (total 15 marks).
This section deals with ‘reading skills” and stress should be on reading only. Regarding the three marks attachment i:e grammar, note making & summary, filling the information correctly and proper presentation is expected in ‘note making’. ‘Summary’ should be around one-third of the ‘para’ or little bit more and should be written in a single para. Neither divide the ‘summary’ into paragraphs nor write it in points. Cover all the points given and give a suitable title.
Section II deals with ‘poetry’ in which four questions of two marks each will be asked. These will include ‘poetic devices’ (figures of speech) and ‘poetic creation’. No spelling mistakes should be made in ‘figures of speech’ and proper explanation is expected.
Some new ‘figures of speech’ should be paid attention to. For example: Refrain, Litotes, Pun , Oxymoron, Paradox etc. However, students can show their creativity in the ‘poetic creation’ corner.
Section 3 is rapid reading, Here the student’s should be thorough with the ‘gist’ of the story and the characters as ‘two activities testing their creativity’ will be asked. They may include, ‘Add a para on your own/ Convert the extract into dialogue’ or ‘Dialogue into story/ Give the gist of the story’.
In two passages of four marks each, the activities testing i:e plot, character, setting, theme, language etc will be asked along with the creative activities. While converting the dialogue into passage use indirect speech.
Sec IV (writing skills) is the most important section. Here, two formal letters (complaint letters and applications) will be given, out of which one is to be opted. It is better to follow the old pattern of address only. Points to be covered in other writing skills are report headline and dateline, leaflet/handout/poster, style and proper beginning and ending.
Carefully watch out for the point in ‘View/counterview’ section and write accordingly. Give suitable title. Write 1 or 2 paragraphs in about 100 words, interview questions, relevant questions, introductory and concluding Question. Write speech, introduction & conclusion. End with a ‘Thank you’ note. Apart from it don’t do grammatical errors.
You can manage your time section wise SEC I — 1 hr & 10 min (read carefully), Sec II — 20 min (catch-up speed), Sec III — 20 min, and Sec IV — 1 hr. Last 10 minutes for revision.
