BENGALURU: The high court on Friday ordered notice to the state government in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the appointment of Shadakshari Swamy as chairman of Karnataka State Public Service Commission (KPSC). Next hearing on the petition is fixed for March 10.
City based human rights activist T Narasimhamurthy has filed this PIL. He claims that Shadakshari Swamy, a retired IAS officer was hurriedly chosen to the post of KPSC chairman on July 26, 2019, the day when B S Yediyurappa took charge as Chief minister. On August 14, 2019 another notification was issued appointing Swamy as the chairman of the commission in terms of Article 316 of the constitution.
The petitioner contends that the appointment in question was based on political considerations, without a search committee as recommended by committee headed by former UPSC chairman PC Hota and the same runs contrary to guidelines imposed by the Apex court wherein the top court had said that chairpersons of public service commission should beyond reproach and his/her appointment should inspire confidence among the people in the institution.
