The accused in police custody
Surat: Pandesara police arrested five men on Sunday for their alleged involvement in rioting and creating nuisance on Bamroli Road for the past one week. The accused were trying to create fear among residents to establish their gang’s dominance in the area. They continued to harass locals even when cops were searching for them and therefore no one was ready to lodge a complaint against the rioters. Two separate offences were registered by Subash Maurya and Radheshyam Chauhan, both businessman, against them after police assured them of strict action against the rioters.
Rohit Pathak, 24; Suraj alias Garam Upadhyay, 19; Aazad Chauhan, 20; Maharshi Yadav, 19; and Saurabh alias Baba alias Chhotu Jha, 19, were arrested on the basis of CCTV footages. The accused were booked for rioting in Mahadev Nagar and Shivam Nagar on February 11 and 12, respectively.
"The accused are local goons and spent time hanging around in the area. With a plan to operate a gang in the area and to make money illegally, they started creating nuisance," said a police officer in Pandesara police station.
"They used to celebrate birthdays of friends in open in the societies. During celebrations, they used to shout and use abusive language during night. When some locals asked them to go away, they used to damage their properties," the police officer said.
The accused damaged about 10 motorcycles, an auto-rickshaw, a vegetable cart and also broke glasses of windows of many properties. The accused had started playing role of mediators in property disputes and planned to extort some people, police said. Police were in search of the accused who would return to the area only at night.
