CHANDIGARH: Two men allegedly duped a 25-year-old man of Rs 29,000 after handing him a bundle of blank papers wrapped in a cloth outside a bank in Sector 45 on Friday.
Mahesh Kumar, a resident of Burail, Sector 45, said he works at Shankar Tyre Service in Burail. His employer gave him a cheque of Rs 29,000 and told him to encash it at Punjab National Bank in Sector 45. When Mahesh came out of the bank, the accused requested him to fill up their cash deposit form. Mahesh replied he was not literate. The accused then told him they have Rs 1.5 lakh and offered him a share in the money if he would deposit it in his bank account for a fee. The accused took Rs 29,000 from Mahesh and handed him a bundle wrapped in a cloth, claiming the Rs 1.5 lakh was in it. When Mahesh opened the cloth, he was shocked to find blank white papers in sizes of currency notes. He raised the alarm but the accused fled.
Police recorded the statement of Mahesh and registered a case under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC. Police are scrutinizing CCTV footage of bank and nearby areas to get clues about the accused.
