West Bengal: CISF Jawan performs CPR to save flyer

Partha Bose performs CPR on J Roychowdhury on Saturday
KOLKATA: A CISF jawan deployed as cabin baggage screener during security check of domestic passengers revived a flyer by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Saturday morning.
CPR is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions with artificial ventilation.
The passenger, J Roychowdhury, was booked on a GoAir flight to Bagdogra and had queued up for security check when he began to experience respiratory problems and chest pain. He somehow managed to reach the security check area and was depositing his cabin bag for X-ray screening when suddenly he collapsed.
According to witnesses, CISF sub-inspector Partha Bose who was scanning the X-ray images, immediately stopped the X-ray machine and rushed to the passenger's aid. Inspector Shampa Karmakar who was nearby, too, came running to his aid.
While Karmakar was checking the distressed passenger's pulse, Bose noticed his irregular breathing. Though a message had been sent to the medical team at the airport, the jawan realized that quick intervention was crucial and performed CPR. This helped revive the passenger. By the time doctors arrived at the spot, the crisis had been overcome. The doctors treated him before allowing him to proceed.
After Roychowdhury was stable, he met Bose and Karmakar and thanked them for their timely help. Doctors, too, were all praise for the duo's life-saving response.
