Terrifying footage emerges showing driver speeding down the WRONG SIDE of a road before fiery crash killed him and an innocent mother-of-two on Valentine's Day

  • Mother-of-two was driving home to have a Valentine's Day dinner with partner
  • Evelin Kwok, 34, was killed when her car collided with another on Friday night
  • Her partner, Wei-kai Lee, said he does not know how to tell Ms Kwok's daughter

A young driver shared footage showing him speeding down the wrong side of the road before a 'gruesome' Valentine's Day crash which killed him and a mother-of-two.

Julyan Mohan, 20, and his friend were travelling through Palmerston, Darwin, at about 11pm on Friday when they collided with a car driven by aged care nurse Evelin Kwok, killing her instantly.

Footage uploaded to Mr Mohan's Snapchat account, which some viewers labelled 'disgusting', showed a car speeding through the streets as a passenger encouraged the driver to cross over to the wrong side of the road to overtake another car.

The footage briefly flicked to the speedometer, which showed the car was travelling at speeds well over 100km/h.

The tragedy, which occurred on the same night the vision was shared, unfolded on Roystonea Avenue in an area with an 80km/h speed limit.

The car travelled past Dorottya Cranney and Joshua Shipsey, who recalled seeing the grey Toyota Corolla attempting to overtake another car further down the road.

They claimed the car crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with mother-of-two Evelin Kwok's Hyundai sedan just moments later.

The 34-year-old was killed on impact.

Ms Cranney described the scene as 'gruesome'.

'I ran over to the mum's car but she must have died on impact... I saw a baby seat and my heart just dropped but I searched and found nobody else inside,' she told NT News.

Meanwhile Mr Shipsey went to check on the passengers in the Toyota. There, he found Mr Mohan clinging to life.

'He showed some signs of life and I tried my best to free him but he was well and truly trapped,' he said.

'The force of the collision had pushed the engine of the car right into his lap... By the time the emergency services arrived and cut him out of the car, he was already gone.'

The pair helped to Mr Mohan's passenger to safety. He was the sole survivor of the crash and remains in Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition.

Ms Kwok had been on the way to work at an aged care facility after spending Valentine's Day with her partner, Wei-kai Lee.

Mr Lee told the ABC his partner worked as a nurse in an aged care home and described her as being 'very compassionate about her work and clients'.

'Even though she worked the overnight shift, she still spent time with the girls before they went to bed as well as on her day off,' he said.

Ms Kwok called Australia home for ten years.

'I don't know how to tell the older girl about what happened to mum,' Mr Lee said.

A GoFundMe was launched on Saturday to raise money for Ms Kwok's daughters.

Major Crash Investigation officers are examining the circumstances of the accident.

Five lives have now been lost on Northern Territory roads so far in 2020.
