ARA/BIHARSHARIF: Police on Saturday booked 25 people for the attack on the convoy of CPI functionary and former JNU Students’ Union president
Kanhaiya Kumar at Bibiganj under Gajrajganj outpost of Bhojpur district on Friday.
The convoy of Kanhaiya, who has been holding public meetings against Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) across the state under his ‘Jan Gan Man Yatra’ since January 29, has so far been attacked for eighth time.
SHO of Gajrajganj police outpost Manish Kumar said an FIR was lodged against 10 named and 15 unknown people for the attack on Kanhaiya’s convoy. “The FIR was been lodged on the statement of an ASI, Hira Lal Rai, as he was a member of the police escort that accompanied the convoy of Kanhaiya. According to our initial investigation, mostly members of Shiv Sena or their sympathizers were behind the attack,” the SHO said.
Bhojpur SP Sushil Kumar, on the other hand, said three people have been arrested so far in connection with attack on Kanhaiya’s convoy and raids were on to nab others. “One of the arrested persons is Vikramaditya Singh, who claims to be the state organizational secretary of Shiv Sena,” the SP said.
Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal activists organised a massive candlelight match in Biharsharif on Friday night in solidarity with Pulwama martyrs and threatened
Kanhaiya of dire consequences, if he made anti-national statements during his proposed visit to Nalanda on Sunday.
Nalanda district CPI general secretary Surindra Ram said tens of hundreds of people listen to Kanhaiya wherever he goes. “The overwhelming response by the people has upset the divisive forces and out of desperation, they have made at least eight abortive attempts on his life,” he said.
Kanhaiya is also scheduled to address a rally at Sheikhpura’s Islamia School Ground on Sunday.
Meanwhile, CPI’s state secretary Satya Narayan Singh on Saturday demanded “adequate security” for Kanhaiya. “Kanhaiya and other persons accompanying him have been attacked at eight places,” Singh said.
