Change in AU statute: Varsity writes to govt

Allahabad: Allahabad University (AU) sent a reminder to the ministry of human resources development (HRD) on Friday seeking amendments in a statute, which would allow it to expand its campus beyond the existing limit of 16-kilometre radius.
If the Centre approves the proposed changes to section 8 (1) of University of Allahabad Act, 2005, it would pave way for the construction of a satellite campus — a goal the varsity has been working towards since the past several years. University of Allahabad Act 2005 section 8 reads: “the powers conferred on the university shall be exercisable in respect of the area within a radius of 16 kilometres from the convocation hall of the university.”
On July 19, 2019, AU executive council wrote to HRD ministry requesting the government to remove the technicality pertaining to 16-kilometre limit and replacing it with ‘anywhere in the country’.
Officiating vice-chancellor of AU RR Tewari said, “It is the need of the hour that AU should expand and if the Act is amended suitably, it would help AU to open its satellite campus in Kaushambi or in any other district”.
