In the wake of the School Education department expressing its inability to complete students-related Aadhaar registration work, the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has decided to open 28 Aadhaar centres in schools in composite Vellore district, sources said.

It was under this scheme that the State Education department went in for a lot of changes to bring students on a par with those in private schools. One of the components was to ensure that all students were issued Aadhaar cards on a par with that of adults.
“ELCOT was informed to take over the scheme from the Education department as the latter found that in integrated Vellore district, one lakh school students were yet to be provided Aadhaar cards and so, ELCOT decided to set up 28 Aadhaar centres in schools to enable students to get the cards,” an official said.
“The facility will give priority to school students and then, if the public wanted to make changes in addresses, they would be allowed to do,” the official added.
“However, for the time being, only change of address is possible online whereas for other services, the concerned person has to be present at the Aadhaar centre as all other Aadhaar related services are based on face authentication which had been newly introduced,” the official further said.
Availability of internet and uninterrupted power supply would, however, decide on how many candidates could be accommodated in a day as in rural pockets both power and internet services could pose a problem, the official further said.
It may be recalled that a few months ago, the School Education department asked all schools to provide Aadhaar cards to all school students. However, in composite Vellore district, it was found that about one lakh students were yet to receive their Aadhaar cards. Also, the Education department had reportedly completed the works in most schools in Tamil Nadu under the Central government’s Samagra Shiksha scheme through which funding was shared 60:40 between the Centre and states.
