AHMEDABAD: Each time a VVIP or a state guest visits the
Sabarmati Ashram located on the west side of the riverfront, residents in three apartments located opposite the Ashram on eastern side of the river turn guests inside their own homes!
During such times, entry to residents is only allowed if they show identity cards to policemen and procure ‘Ahmedabad crime branch’ stamped gate passes. The three apartments — Aqua Sheetal, Iscon Riverside and to a certain extent Shilalekh — are directly opposite Hriday Kunj, Gandhi’s home. Their terraces turn into security platforms with men in uniform peering through binoculars and reporting every activity via wireless before, during and after VIP visits at the Sabarmati Ashram.
"From security point of view one gets a clear view of the Ashram from our building terraces. A team of Ahmedabad police was here and took details of 15-odd families who have been living here. On February 24, the members will be allowed only if their names are on the list," says manager of the apartment Jayesh Sharma.
At Iscon Riverside, a team of policemen had visited the society office around 5:30pm to take identification details of all residents. "Our terraces and sometimes, even our floors, are occupied by security personnel during VIP visits. There is a detailed security protocol for our residents, while entering or exiting the apartment," confirmed the society manager Narendra Soni.
3D scanners used at Sabarmati Ashram Security agencies including city crime branch deployed 3D scanners at Sabarmati Ashram on Thursday. Officials mentioned that the landscape scanners are used for multiple purposes. "But in this scenario, the scans would give precise distances between two points, helping to arrange security of the VVIPs. It is likely that other spots including Motera stadium, will also be scanned," said an official.
