Cops at the spot of crime
RAJKOT: A man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly desecrating the statue of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar on Wednesday at Hospital Chowk in Rajkot. Police said the accused, Hareshsinh Jadeja (40), had allegedly garlanded the statue with shoes.
During investigation, it was revealed that Jadeja was suffering from learning difficulties. “Jadeja, a resident of Gundavadi locality of Rajkot, was caught on the CCTV footage while committing the crime. The CCTV footage shows him cycling towards the statue,” said H M Gadhvi, inspector with Rajkot detection of crime branch.
The incident had sparked off a massive protest among the members of Dalit community who thronged around the statue and demanded police action. After arresting Jadeja, the police booked him for hurting the religious sentiments of the community and did a reconstruction of the crime.
