Detenu escapes from prisoners’ ward in government hospital

Coimbatore: A Goondas Act detenu escaped from the prisoners’ ward in the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) in the early hours of Thursday.
T Subramani, 31, a construction worker at Thamaraipatti near Dharapuram in Tirupur district, was arrested on September 6 last year for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
He was lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison and detained under the Goondas Act on October 2.
Subramani was admitted to the prisoners’ ward in CMCH last week after he complained of epilepsy. Four police personnel were deployed for security in the ward.
Around 4am on Thursday, he escaped by breaking open the ventilator of a toilet in the ward.
The incident came to light only around 5am when other prisoners knocked on the door of the toilet. When the police personnel broke open the door, they found that Subramani had escaped through the ventilator.
The armed reserve police personnel lodged a complaint with the Race Course (law & order) police who registered a case under Section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code. Police have formed two special teams to nab the absconding prisoner. Further investigations are on.
