MANGALURU: Muzrai minister Kota Srinivas Poojary on Thursday launched "Sapthapadi Ratha", a vehicle to create awareness on the government’s mass marriage scheme, at the premises of Kollur Mookambika Temple, about 160 kms from here.
The scheme was launched by chief minister BS Yediyurappa in January this year. Under the scheme, the government intends to conduct mass marriages every year at 100 ‘A’ grade temples, managed by the Muzrai department. The temples will bear the expenses of these marriages. These temples will spend Rs 55,000 on each couple, including 8 grams of gold for the mangalasutra and Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 cash for the bride and groom respectively on the wedding day.
Poojary said that under his department there were 3400 temples of which about 200 had good revenues. On April 26, the mass marriages will be conducted at 100 A-grade temples under Hindu religious rites, he said adding temple administrations were geared up to conduct the marriages in a systematic manner, irrespective of the numbers.
The Ratha will visit each and every village in the district and will create awareness regarding the scheme which will be a boon for economically poor, he said. Poojary pointed out that Kollur temple has received 16 applications and expected about 1000 couples to take benefit of the scheme on April 26. Couples have to register their names by March 27 at the respective temple jurisdictions.
