Padma awardees Sukri Bommagowda, Tulsi Gowda to lead Parisara Sammelana

MANGALURU: Padma Shri awardee and Halakki tribal folk singer Sukri Bommagowda, another Padma award winner Tulsi Gowda, who is known as the 'Encyclopedia of forest' for her vast knowledge of plants and herbs, folk (pad-dana) singer Kutharu Thimmakka and activist Diyego Bastyav Siddi will be the guests at the Parisara Sammelana to be held under the aegis of National Environment Care Federation (NECF) at Tree Park, Tannirbavi, on March 1.
NECF state secretary Shashidhar Shetty said the whole day convention on environment will be held in the form of court proceedings with noted human rights activist Dr Ravindranath Shanbhag presiding over the meet as a judge. Meanwhile, 10 eminent advocates, who are experts in laws pertaining to forest, environment and wildlife, will be part of the discussions that will revolve around various issues related to afforestation, water crisis, pollution, rights of tribals, endosulfan, and protection of Western Ghats, he said.
“We have requested secretaries of forest, agriculture, revenue and other departments to either represent or send their senior officials to participate in the convention. Resolutions with demands for changes in law or to bring new legislations to solve various issues will be adopted at the convention and the same will be submitted to the government,” Shetty said, adding that invitations have been sent to legislators and students.
Activists from Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts who were fighting for drinking water will take part in the convention and express their views on Yettinahole project, which will not be solution for their water crisis, Shetty said.
Activist and artist Dinesh Holla, who designed logo for the convention, said the temperature in coastal districts had touched 38 degrees in November, 2019. Meanwhile, the coast also witnessed disastrous flood and drought. All these issues of man-made disasters need to be discussed and action should be taken to stop all activities that destabilise our environment, he said.
