PUNE: The last chance to enjoy the mild winter this year will come up between Friday and Monday when the city will experience a night temperature drop.
This weekend could be cooler than the last one. Cold, dry northerly winds may begin to enter north Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune district, and Konkan (partially) from Friday. Minimum temperatures will be down till Monday, Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, IMD Pune told TOI.
Night temperatures in Pune may fall by 3-4 degrees celsius till February 17 and may start rising after that in line with the recent forecasts indicating early arrival of summer in parts of the state and the country, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said.
“Till February 16, minimums would be more or less the same as they would be on February 14-15, while they would begin an upward climb from February 17 gradually,” Kashyapi said.
The IMD weather models show Pune’s night temperature will dip to 12 degrees celsius to 13 degrees celsius on February 14 and 15 in Shivajinagar and Pashan.
“After February 20, we will see minimal chances of a minimum temperature fall in Pune. The latest extended range forecast points to chances of above normal night temperatures during February-end and beginning of March in Madhya Maharashtra and Pune,” he added.
The temperature drop from Friday would be a result of cold winds penetrating the lower atmospheric level in the absence of an anticyclone prevailing further up north.
An anticyclone stationed over north Maharashtra or further north usually blocks northerly winds from entering the state. But as there would not be any such anti-cyclone over our region (especially over north Madhya Maharashtra), northerly winds would begin to enter once again in north Maharashtra.
