The Supreme Court expressed concern over the alarming rise in the criminalisation of politics and made it mandatory for political parties to provide justification for selecting candidates with a criminal background instead of a clean image candidate. Parties will have 48 hours to put all the information in public domain after announcing a candidate. The bench accepted the suggestions given by Election Commission that parties must be directed to publish credentials, achievements and criminal antecedents of candidates on newspaper, social media platforms and their websites along with an explanation for their selection.
