BJD woman leader sets self on fire over son's arrest in Ganjam

Meenakshi Mishra
BERHAMPUR: A BJD women's wing leader in Ganjam district set herself on fire on the premises of the Berhampur SP's office in protest against the arrest of her son, who she claimed was framed. The woman, 41-year-old Meenakshi Mishra, was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital with 50 per cent burns. She was later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, after her condition deteriorated.
Sources said Meenakshi's son Raja was arrested by the police on January 28 in an assault case. On Wednesday, around 1 pm, Meenakshi visited SP Pinak Mishra's office to lodge her protest. But the SP was not there. She then met the additional SP Prabhat Routray and lodged her protest. The ASP assured her that they would look into her case.
After coming out of the office, she poured kerosene over her and set herself on fire. "Our staff rescued her and rushed her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital. Since her condition was critical, she was later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack," said Pinak.
The SP said Meenakshi may have concealed a kerosene bottle in her bag when she came to meet the SP.
BJD leader made a video
Sources said the BJD leader made a video of herself where she threatened self-immolation before setting herself on fire. Meenakshi had unsuccessfully contested in the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) election from ward number 39. The SP said at least five persons, including a teenager and Meenakshi’s son were arrested for an alleged altercation at Panda colony under Baidynathpur police station limits on January 28. Trouble started over a parking issue. Some youths allegedly attacked Raja and when Meenakshi intervened, she was not spared either. While a case was filed against the alleged assaulters, they also lodged a counter case against Raja. “Based on their complaint, the police arrested Raja,” said Pinak, who denied Meenakshi’s allegation that her son was false implicated in the case. It is learnt that Raja had seven cases registered against him in the past.
