Parimala of Kasimedu, who used to sell fish two months ago, now struggles to recollect her name. An accident that took place three months ago has crippled her life and confined the 65-year-old to her room.
Always a multi-tasker, before her accident she used to wake up early, cook meals for her elderly husband, and leave to sell fish. “She brought home money and ran the family happily,” says her daughter Mariyammal.

In October last year, Parimala stepped out of her home to buy fish in a wholesale market in Pattalam and was returning to Kasimedu. She was trying to cross the road around 6am when a motorist slammed into her at high speed. The woman was thrown away and her head hit a huge stone. Passersby caught hold of the youth and handed him over to police.
Parimala was wheeled into the ICU at Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital where doctors said she had suffered a brain haemorrhage and needed surgery. Her children managed to pool in some money and managed to pay for her surgery. After the operation, when she woke up from the hospital bed, she was unable to identify her children.
“We couldn’t see her like that. She had all the details about her fish business on her finger tips. Now, she has nothing left in her mind,” says Mariyammal.
Her bed-ridden husband was fully dependent on Parimala for his daily needs. The family members say they had never imagined life could take such a turn for them.
“We have never seen her remaining idle,” says her son Anbazhagan.
The family says that Parimala has been forced to suffer for no fault of hers. They said they are still trying to figure out whose fault it was. “The biker could have avoided speeding. The accident could have been easily avoided,” says Mariyammal.
The family has appealed to all bikers not to resort to speeding.
