Farm labourer’s daughter wins gold medal in international yoga championship

Kiranjit Kaur with her coach in Malaysia
HISAR: Kiranjit Kaur, daughter of Jagseer Singh, a labourer from Panniwala Morikan village of Sirsa district, has become the proverbial Golden Girl. Kiranjit defeated ‘yogis’ of Thailand, Nepal and Malaysia in the international championships held in Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia on Tuesday evening. The event was organised by School Games and Activity Development Foundation.
Eighteen yoga contestants from four countries participated in the event. Of which five made to the second round and were performing brilliantly. The organisers decided to make stamina the game changer. Kiranjit remained in a yoga posture for two and a half minutes, winning the round. It was a smooth ride for Kiranjit after that who won the gold by clearing the third and final round.
Growing up, Kiranjit said life was very tough for her and her two sisters. While her father worked as a labourer eke out a meagre living, her mother was paralysed after giving birth to her. She said she was in fact nursed by her maternal aunt as her mother was unable to. Her village lacked even the basic facilities. But interestingly, the last time that the spotlight was on the village, it was also because of a sportsman. Cricketer Barinder Sran hails from here too.
When Kiranjit realised she was good at yoga, she pushed herself to train even if it meant pushing her father for extra money for training and such. She said she almost did not make it to the contest as she was not able to afford the air trip to Malaysia. But she managed to convince the organisers to fund her trip.
In November 2014, Kiranjit, who is at present pursuing her Bsc in Talwandi Sabo, won the silver at a national-level yoga championship held in Palwal, in the under-17 age group. She won the silver medal irrespective of the injuries she received during practice. The win placed her at number two nationally.
