LUCKNOW: A 30-year-old passenger trying to sneak in 50 gold biscuits, approximately worth Rs 2.46 crore, was arrested from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Amausi on Wednesday.
Sudhir Kumar, a native of Lucknow, arrived in the city from Dubai on Air India flight IX 194 that landed at 1.10pm. Deputy commissioner (airport) Niharika Lakha said security officers got suspicious because the passenger seemed to be in 'unusual hurry'.
"When quizzed, Kumar fumbled while answering. He was frisked and we found his suitcase very heavy. We opened it to find gold biscuits concealed in an inside pocket, which was stitched up," Lakha said.
Interrogation has revealed that Kumar went to Dubai to work as a tailor around 45 days ago. He failed to land the job he wanted, but was roped in by a gang of smugglers to work for them.
Deputy commissioner Lakha said the passenger has been booked under the Customs Act, 1962, and his antecedents would be investigated.
