A violent carjacker is on the loose in Melbourne after bashing a woman in the head with a hammer.
The 24-year-old woman had parked her car outside her home on Cardigan Street in Carlton in Melbourne's inner north when she was attacked at 6.50am on Tuesday.
A man approached her and repeatedly hit her in the head with a hammer, splattering blood onto her white Mazda 3 and into the gutter, before entering the car.
Hearing her screams, the woman's husband rushed outside to help but was also assaulted by the hammer-wielding thug.

A Mazda 3 car was left with large blood stains after a woman was attacked by a carjacker with a hammer on Cardigan Street in Carlton in Melbourne's inner north at 6.50am on Tuesday
'I just heard a woman sort of screaming. It was a very agonised scream. She was holding onto her head,' one witness told 7News.
Another witness said: 'She was saying: "Help! Someone's stealing my car."'
According to one witness, the husband was able to 'beat up' the carjacker while he was inside the vehicle.
Shortly after, a hero neighbour joined the fray and pulled the attacker through the Mazda's passenger door, who tore out the car's centre console in the process.
The carjacker was pinned down by the neighbour - but managed to escape by running west on Palmerston Street.
The neighbour reportedly tried to stop the attacker by biting his arm at one point.

Hearing her screams for help, the woman's husband (pictured) rushed outside to help but was also assaulted by the hammer-wielding thug. A neighbour was able to pull the attacker from the car and hold him down but he escaped
Despite the violent attack, the woman sustained a non-life threatening injury and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The husband sustained a minor injury and was assessed by paramedics at the scene.
Police said the attacker is 'African in appearance and described as tall, with a thin build and short dark hair'.
Authorities reportedly already have photos of the carjacker as he is believed to have committed a number of other crimes in Melbourne's inner suburbs recently.
