Mazda To Recall 2016 CX-5 Over Failing LED Daytime Running Lights

Mazda will recall in excess of 35,000 CX-5 models from the 2016 model year due to an issue related to the LED daytime running lights.

According to a notification posted with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the gasket used to seal the wiring harness to the LED module was not manufactured to Mazda’s specification. This means that as the gasket degrades over time, it can release sulfur which can corrode the LED control circuit. The daytime running lights could flicker, fail to illuminate fully or fail altogether as a result.

The recall covers no less than 36,761 CX-5 models through the U.S. and U.S. territories. No accidents or injuries related to the issue have been reported.

The fault could prove to be safety issue if the daytime running lights fail in low-light situations when the headlights are turned off by making the crossover harder to see for other motorists and pedestrians.

Mazda owners have been complaining about the faulty DRLs for quite some time, TFL Car reports, particularly since it costs $600 per side in parts alone to replace the CX-5’s light assemblies.

Mazda has yet to detail how it intends to fix the issue or when the recall will commence. As the car manufacturer finalizes plans, concerned CX-5 owners should check periodically with the NHSTA for details and / or contact Mazda directly for additional information.
