MOHALI: The court of special CBI judge Harinder Kaur Sidhu dismissed application for regular bail by former president of the Goraya municipal council, Chunni Lal Gaba on Tuesday. Gaba had surrendered in the CBI court on January 24 after evading arrest for three years.
Gaba’s anticipatory bail pleas had been rejected by Patiala district court, then Punjab and Haryana high court and later the Supreme Court. The entire Gaba family is accused in the multi-crore synthetic drug racket, run by Arjuna awardee wrestler-turned-cop Jagdish Singh, alias Bhola. CBI public prosecutor J P S Sarao said the state had contested his regular bail as Gaba is one of the accused in the drug racket.
Sarao said Gaba had been evading arrest for last three years after his anticipatory bail applications were rejected by the high court and the Supreme Court. “He was the last accused on the run in the multi-crore synthetic drug racket run by Jagdish Bhola,” said Sarao. Earlier, Gaba’s son Gurmesh Kumar Gaba was arrested in the same case and is in custody.
As per charge sheet, Gurmesh’s brother Gurjit had sent a package containing pseudoephedrine, a banned substance, worth over Rs 150 crore to Canada and the money generated was used by Gurmesh to buy properties.
