Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the assembly, on Wednesday, that the government was making all possible interventions to professionalize the police force ‘which could prevent suicidal tendencies among police personnel due to issues at home and at workplace’.
“Though the number of suicides among police personnel is low in Kerala, as per the figures published by NCRB, it is time for transforming the force into a professional system, which can enable police personnel overcome weaknesses and fight against crime together,” the CM said, while replying to a submission by Parakkal Abdullah.
The CM also said that no case of police personnel quitting the job following discrimination based on caste or gender has come to the notice of the government. “Kerala’s common psyche cannot allow such practices, and if such things occur, strict action will be taken against the guilty,” the CM added.
Kerala police should be able to maintain the country-wide recognition the force received, thanks to its efficiency in investigation and cracking cases, the CM said. “The reasons for suicidal tendencies include domestic issues and stress related to discharge of duties. The government does not want any repetition of unfortunate incidents of police personnel committing suicide, and is implementing various programmes to establish a professional system,” Vijayan said.
