Nagpur: Every effort should be made by the people to contribute their best for the betterment of the society, said mayor Sandip Joshi on Tuesday.
He was speaking at the centenary celebrations of Matru Sewa Sangh Institute of Social Work (MSSISW). Deputy mayor Manisha Kothe, director of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Pramod Padole, vice-president of Matru Seva Sangh Jayashree Pendharkar, secretary Lata Deshmukh, journalist Kartik Lokhande and professor Jyoti Niswade were seated on the dais.
Joshi said small changes in an individual’s life will augur well in maintaining discipline like following traffic rules, proper parking of vehicles, stopping before the zebra crossing and avoiding honking. This will have a positive impact on the society, he added.
In her introductory speech, Deshmukh highlighted the efforts undertaken by Matru Sewa Sangh, Sitabuldi. She said a few people were part of it when it was established. With the passage of time, more number of people joined and shaped it for a better future. MSS, one of its kind in Maharashtra, has received many awards for social work, she said.
An in-house bulletin ‘Satya Kamal’, previously known as ‘Page 1’, was relaunched at the programme.
Nisawade said, “The institute is a pioneer in social work educational set-up in the region and strives for the uplift of the society.”
Pendharkar said people associated with MSS have been selflessly serving the society though they come from different backgrounds. Childcare, looking after poor, elderly and sick people are the areas that MSS pays attention to, she said and spoke about the plans to expand the institution.
Kothe said it was Kamlatai Hospet who laid the foundation of MSS to extend medical and other aid to poor, especially women. Her greatness lies in the fact that when women were confined to household work and nobody coming forward to do social work, Hospet raised the bar and established the institution which is now catering to the need of thousands of people, Kothe said.
A documentary film was screened by students, followed by an act highlighting the works of Kamlatai Hospet.
The dignitaries were felicitated with memento, shawl and coconut.
Nisawade proposed a vote of thanks.
