TISS student gets Bombay high court relief in sedition case

Bombay high court
MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday granted interim relief against the arrest of Urvashi Chudavala, a 22-year-old student booked for the serious offence of sedition following the February 1 queer community gathering at Azad Maidan. However, the court directed her to come to the police station on February 12-13 from 11am to 2pm and hand over her dual SIM phone for investigation.
Justice S K Shinde asked the police if it had followed guidelines while invoking IPC Section 124A for sedition and sought written legal opinion as required to be "followed scrupulously" pursuant to an earlier HC judgment. State public prosecutor Deepak Thakare said it had not yet, but would.
HC also said it has to consider the twin test laid down by SC-if the statement led to violence or public disorder-to justify it as sedition.
