Turkey managed to welcome more than 52 million visitors last year, marking a 14% increase year-on-year. This made Turkey the 14th country with the highest year-on-year growth.
Erkan Yağcı, the head of the Mediterranean Touristic Hoteliers Association (AKTOB), said that Turkey experienced a speedy recovery recently, continuing to prove itself as a major destination.
Tourism professionals have now focused on Turkey’s new tourism strategy and are working towards increasing the country’s share in global tourism receipts.
The new tourism strategy targets over 75 million tourists and $65 billion in tourism revenue by 2023, which is the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic.
Besides Turkey, Mexico, Thailand, Germany and the United Kingdom also managed to enter the top 10 most popular tourist destinations globally.
According to Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), tourism revenue in Turkey witnessed $34.5 billion last year, marking a record high. This is a 17% increase compared to the sector’s revenue of $29.5 billion in 2018.
