Speeding mini-truck mows down student

LUCKNOW: An 18-year-old student of a private university died while another suffered serious injuries after their scooter was hit by a mini-truck on Faizabad road on Tuesday.
Police said Akshay Kumar Srivastava of Madiaon was returning home from college with his friend Devesh Upadhyaya (18) of Indiranagar around 5.30pm when a speeding mini-truck hit their two-wheeler near Indira Canal.
Akshay was run over by the mini-truck while Devesh suffered head and limb injuries.
Police took them to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where doctors pronounced Akshay dead. Devesh is undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be critical.
Station house officer, Chinhat, Sachin Singh said: "The driver of the mini-truck fled from the spot after parking the vehicle on the roadside."
According to eye-witnesses, the mini-truck driver was speeding despite traffic and could not see the scooter while overtaking another vehicle. Akshay came under the wheels by the time the driver could apply brake, they added.
