Warner: I know exactly what I'm walking into in SA

2020-02-11 11:40

Cape Town - Australia batsman David Warner says his experiences in England will him deal with any situation when he returns to South Africa for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal.

Warner, along with Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft, served a one-year suspension from international cricket for their part in the scandal that took place at Newlands in 2018.

The 33-year-old Warner copped plenty of abuse when he returned to the international fold ahead of the World Cup in the UK last year and then the subsequent Ashes series.

The Aussies are set to play three T20Is and three ODIs against Proteas, starting later this month, and Warner spoke about how "excited" he was about returning to South Africa.

Warner said: "I knew what I was walking into in England and I know exactly what I'm walking into in South Africa.

"You just look at the recent series against England; it doesn't matter where you go in the world, you're probably going to cop something of some sort.

"You've got to try and get that out of your head and not let that affect you. I've well and truly learned my lessons from last time.

"It's going to be great to go back over there, and I'm just really excited to get out there against South Africa and hopefully come home with a win."

Warner was speaking after receiving the Allan Border Medal as Australia's best player across all three formats this summer, which he admitted was emotional for himself after not even being invited to the awards last season.

He said: "There was obviously a lot of work behind the scenes to reintegrate the three of us and I really appreciate the way that unfolded and the way we were reintegrated back into the team and into the fold, and that was by having net sessions as well at the Test matches, keeping our sharpness up against quality bowling, and I'm extremely grateful for that."
