GURUGRAM: A new
weather station is set to come up right in the heart of the city, which till now has been dependent on
Palam Observatory for information related to weather.
The state government has issued a letter to
GMDA in this direction.
“After receiving the letter, we decided to install the weather station at Huda City Centre. However, when we approached the
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), they informed us that an automatic weather station (AWS) is already functional at the metro station,” said a senior GMDA official.
The official added that they have now written to the DMRC seeking information on the AWS at Huda City Centre. “We need to ascertain if the weather station meets the standards prescribed by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) or not. If it does, we will ask DMRC to put up screens displaying the weather information for the residents,” said the official.
In such a scenario, the GMDA will scout for another prominent location for the weather station. “The IMD has offered to fund the weather station and once we have clarity about the Huda City Centre station, we can decide where and when to install the weather station,” the official said.
Gurugram has an automatic weather station at
National Institute of Solar Energy on Gurugram-Faridabad Road, which is not linked to IMD and therefore not used for official data. There is a weather observatory in
Ayanagar too, but that is closer to the Delhi border.
The city relies on Palam Observatory for its weather feed, but since the distance between Gurugram and Palam is substantial, the information can be off the mark.
