Kalkaji is part of South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency along with nine other Vidhan Sabha segments. The present geographical structure of Kalkaji constituency came into existence in 2008 as a part of the implementation of the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India.

Atishi is an educator who switched to active politics. Oxford-educated Atishi was advisor to Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, and played a key role in education reforms. She also played a pivotal role in the government's prestigious mohalla sabha programme.

In 2013, she took up an active role in AAP and went on to become a party spokesperson and member of its political affairs committee. While working as an advisor on a token salary of Re 1, Atishi was sacked by the Centre in 2018, a move termed as "political vendetta" by her party.

Atishi contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from East Delhi and came a distant third to BJP's Gautam Gambhir.
