How they are making good use of kitchen waste

Though everyone wants a clean city, only a few societies are contributing their bit by segregating their waste and using the wet waste to convert into manure which they put into good use in their landscape
If citizens are to contribute towards cleanliness of the city, the best way is to begin in their society. If whatever that is carelessly thrown into the bin, ifresidents segregate it into wet and dry waste, the wet waste can easily be composted and produce rich top soil for our plants. If each one of us does our civic duty of source segregation and composting, then we are well on our way to a clean, garbage-free city. Here we present three societies that are ensuring proper waste management disposal system by segregating wet waste and converting it into compost which they use for their plants.

This is the future to survive. The heaps of waste each day rising at Pirana should be a concern for each of us. Imagine the plight of the people residing nearby. We give dry waste to the AMC, but I believe a proper recycling system has to be developed by them. Productive uses of waste have to be implemented to make the city environment-friendly. I do not even use polythene bags to dispose of the waste.

This huge society housing 1,000 flats ensures zero waste. The society has provided separate dustbins for wet and dry waste. The wet waste once collected from the flats is put into a composting machine that creates organic manure. The manure is utilised in the landscape. They make sure that dry waste is not sent to the civic body. They sell dry waste to the NGOs or institutions for recycling.
We work hard to retain zero waste. We utilise the wet waste smartly by using composting machine to convert it into manure, while dry waste is provided to companies or NGOs.” He then adds, “Two complimentary dustbins are provided to the residents to ensure that they segregate their waste. Awareness programmes are conducted for the tenants and new residents so they willingly join the efforts for zero waste

All the 110 flats in the society contribute in making good use of the waste and keeping the premises clean. All the wet waste is deposited into the composting machine installed in their premises and is converted into organic manure. They use it for the plants and in the landscape. The dry waste is collected by the AMC. The society has earmarked a waste collection center where the residents deposit the waste. This is later segregated into dry and wet waste by the housekeeping staff.
Residents give their waste to the housekeeping staff who segregate it. The wet waste is deposited into a machine that converts it into organic manure. This is used in the garden.

For the past one year, this society has been converting their wet waste into manure. The society houses 56 flats, but only 22 families currently reside in these flats. They have provided two tubs to the housekeeping staff to segregate the waste. A composting machine costing Rs 80,000 has been installed. Earlier, with only a few families living there, manure was created every fortnight. Now, manure is created every week. The composting machines are run 24 hours to produce manure. Vijay Shah, building supervisor said, “Using the wet waste effectively is essential. It will lessen the carbon dioxide in the air and the cleanliness will be maintained. We have a huge garden where the manure is utilised. Residents are very supportive of the cause. It is a practice every society must adopt. The bad odour of the wet waste can be eliminated. Each individual will contribute in reducing the heap at Pirana.”
