Several roads were blocked in Ga-Rankuwa, north-west of Pretoria, on Monday morning as residents embarked on service delivery protests.

Community leader Majorie Rantloane told SAfm that there were several issues that needed to be attended to.

"We have been calling to the [Tshwane] municipality to fix our streets. Ga-Rankuwa has never had tarred roads as long as it has been.

"With all the floods happening, the streets have becomome more dangerous," she said.

Rantloane called on the provincial government to fix the township's problems.

Several intersections were blocked by rubble and burning tyres. In one area, a group of children turned motorists away who refused to pay a toll fee.

With a heavy police presence in the area, there were few protesters, apart from a group of children who were manning one of the blockades.

Motorists who drove around the blockade by driving on the pavements were scolded by the children.

Community leaders are currently locked in talks with the MMC for economic development and spatial planning, Isak Pietersen, who is representing the municipality.
