Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio’s bromance saved awards season

When Brad Pitt accepted the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, he gave sincere thanks to a lot of people—director Quentin Tarantino, his family, people who gave him an early shot in Hollywood. But there was one person he gave both praise, and a punchline: his co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio. “Leo, I’ll ride on your coattails any day, man. The view’s fantastic.”

In an (admittedly dull) awards season, Pitt and DiCaprio’s friendship has been arguably the most fun thing to watch. Sure, their camaraderie was noticeable during the Cannes press circuit for Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood, but their mutual respect and praise for each other's performance barely registered as anything more than normal co-star behaviour.

Then came the news that Pitt and DiCaprio were real-life friends. Friends who reportedly made pottery and ate sandwiches together. “Brad’s got his own sculpting studio at his house and Leo loves coming over to use it,” per UK tabloid The Sun. “Leo brings sandwiches over from their favourite place, Fat Sal’s, and they spend their boys’ nights creating art until the early hours.”

Things kicked up a notch at this year's Golden Globes: “I also have to thank my partner in crime, LDC,” Pitt said during his acceptance speech. “Before The Revenant, I used to watch year after year his costars accept awards and get up and thank him profusely and I know why. He’s an all-star, he’s a gent.” He ended it with a joke: “I would’ve shared the raft,” Pitt said in his acceptance speech—a nod to the internet theory that the door Jack and Rose shared in Titanic was big enough for two people.

Twitter instantly went crazy; sure, the speech was funny and sincere, but—wait, Pitt casually calls DiCaprio “LDC”?

The nickname, as it turns out, is pretty tame compared to what DiCaprio calls Pitt! A few weeks later, at the SAG Awards, Pitt revealed DiCaprio’s nickname for him is (insert drum roll): Lover.

“It’s a bit confusing, but I roll with it,” Pitt told Entertainment Weekly.

Pour one out for these two crazy kids; only in Hollywood, indeed.
