Parliament LIVE: Verbal Duel in LS Over SC's Quota in Jobs Order, Govt to Clarify Stand as Oppn Seeks Review

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met senior ministers this morning in his Parliament House office. Though such meetings are routine during Parliament sessions, Monday's meet assume importance in the backdrop of the court ruling.

What Did the SC Ruling Say? | The Supreme Court has ruled that there is no fundamental right to claim reservation in promotion for SCs, STs and OBCs in government jobs.

The recent Supreme Court ruling is a "sensitive issue" and the Social Justice and Empowerment Minister would make a statement on the subject in the House, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said.

Speaker Om Birla told them that the matter can be raised during the Zero Hour, saying that the Question Hour was "important".

As soon as the Question Hour started, Opposition members, led by Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, sought to raise the issue. He was also joined by members from other parties, including the DMK.

Debate on SC/ST Act in Lok Sabha | Debating the SC/ST act in the Lok Sabha, NDA ally and LJP President Chirag Paswan says his party is opposed to the Supreme Court decision. "Lok Jan Shakti Party does not agree with the Supreme Court's decision that reservations for jobs, promotions, is not a fundamental right. We urge the Centre to intervene in this matter," he says. 

Speaking on Coronavirus in the Lok Sabha, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan says the country is well prepared to deal with the threat. "All necessary precautions are being taken....we are keeping a close tab on the situation. We are having video calls with other states on this issue."

Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha have also begun. Raising the issue of ailing economy, former Finance Minister P Chidamabarm says the government has a penchant for not admitting its mistakes. "The goverment believes that the problems are cyclical and not structured," he says.  

The Lok Sabha proceedings have begun. Opposition parties wanted to raise the issue of Supreme Court ruling which states that reservations for jobs, promotions, is not a fundamental right. Rajnath Singh says the Social Justice Minister will be here shortly and he will give governments response on the issue.
