Nevertheless, tourist arrivals has been increasing slowly after the suicide bomb attacks on churches and hotels on Easter Sunday in 2019.
As per the recent monthly report of Sri Lanka Tourism, the largest source market for tourists in January-Feb was India after China and the United Kingdom. For Sri Lanka, Europe became the largest source of tourist traffic with 50% of the total traffic received in January 2020.
Asia and Pacific accounted for 40% of the total traffic, Americas 6%, Middle East 3% and Africa 1%.
Compared to January 2019, the highest drop of 27.4 was recorded for African region as Asia and Pacific recorded a plunge of 7.7%. Europe recorded a drop of 7.5% whereas Americas recorded a decline of 3.7%.
It is quite remarkable that in arrivals, Middle East has recorded a rise of 41% as a region and as a country Saudi Arabia has recorded a rise of 122.5%.
India, China, United Kingdom, Russian Federation and Germany were Sri Lanka’s top five international tourist generating markets in the month of January this year.
To Sri Lanka, India was the largest source of tourist traffic with 18% of the total traffic received in January last year. China accounted for 10% of the total traffic; while UK, Russian Federation and Germany accounted for 9% (both) and 5% respectively.
