PUNE: Passengers travelling by trains can now check the authenticity of the travelling ticket examiners (TTEs) as well as porters by scanning the QR codes on their identity cards.
“In order to prevent impersonation, all TTEs originating from the Pune rail division are being given new identity cards with QR (quick reaction) codes, which can be scanned by passengers if they have any doubt,” Manoj Jhawar, public relations officer, Pune rail division, said.
“The porters have also been given these new identity cards,” he said. Between April and December last year, railway officials detected five cases of TTE impersonation.
The Pune division currently has a total of 250 TTEs and around 150 licenced porters.
“If passengers have any doubt, they can scan the QR code of the TTE printed on their identity cards. Once they do it, all details of the TTE, including his name, photograph, address, employee code etc will be displayed. The TTEs and porters have been told to cooperate with passengers in case they want to check. In a day or two, all TTEs and registered porters will have these new identity cards. People can also call RPFs number 182 for help,” another official said.
Passengers hailed the move. “The big question remains whether TTEs will allow us to scan their identity cards and not create a scene. It will prevent passengers from getting cheated,” said Jatin Kumar, who often travels by long distance trains from Pune.
