FALL RIVER — Local and state police are investigating after a man was run over by a vehicle while he was fixing a portion of its bumper Saturday afternoon, an official said.

Fall River police and fire were called to the area of 748 Pleasant St. about 1 p.m. for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, Fall River police Sgt. Joseph Galvao said in an email.

First responders found a man who had been run over by a vehicle and was unconscious in the roadway, according to Galvao. The man was rushed to a local hospital.

Investigators learned the man had been “under the vehicle” fixing a portion of the bumper when the vehicle was driven off, running over the victim, said Galvao. It was unclear whether the man was underneath the front or rear end of the vehicle.

Galvao declined to comment further and did not indicate the extent of the victim’s injuries, but WJAR reported Saturday that the victim was a 51-year-old man who was pronounced dead at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Galvao referred additional comment to the office of District Attorney Thomas Quinn III. The DA's office takes the lead on investigations involving a death.

The DA’s office did not immediately respond to requests for information on Sunday.
