PANAJI: Around 230 cases of crimes against women, including cases of rape, molestation and outraging of modesty —have remained undetected in the state, over the past five years.
Goa police said they were trying to solve the undetected cases. “From time to time, directions are given to all the investigation officers to conduct thorough and speedy investigations and to make sincere efforts to detect the cases,” chief minister Pramod Sawant in a written reply tabled in the state legislative assembly.
There are two police stations for women in the state— one at Panaji (North Goa) and the other, a women and child protection unit, at Margao (South Goa), Sawant said.
Goa police have registered cases of rape, kidnapping, molestation, eve-teasing, marital abuse, dowry deaths and immoral trafficking of women, among others. While chargesheets have been filed in many cases, based on evidence, most of the cases are pending trial. Some cases have been closed by the police , due to lack of evidence.
Goa police have made arrests in several cases of crime against women in the past couple of years. Police had arrested three Indore-based men for gangraping a 20-year-old woman at Betalbatim beach. The three raped the woman, filmed the act, and demanded money in exchange for not making the video public.
A 22-year-old chef from Kuwait and native of Kolhapur, Joseph Das, was arrested for molesting a 17-yearold German girl at Ourem beach in Canacona.
The police had arrested nine tourists from Pune for allegedly attempting to outrage the modesty of a minor girl at Calangue beach. The nine men also assaulted the girl’s minor brother and created a ruckus before they were arrested.
