KOLKATA: With the sun emerging out from the
cloud cover, the
mercury went down a notch below the normal mark on Sunday. Met officials have ruled out the possibility of
rain as of now, saying the mercury will plunge further by another two or three degrees by Monday.
The cloud cover, drizzle and light rain in some places in the past few days dragged the day temperature down while pushing up the minimum temperature. The minimum temperature had shot above 17°C on Saturday. It receded to 15.6°C on Sunday, which was one degree below the normal mark.
“The chill-bearing north- westerly wind has started breezing in. The mercury will fall further on Monday. At present, there is no major weather system that will disrupt the path of the
northwesterly. Hence, the
chill will persist for the next few days,” said GK Das, director (weather) at
Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
Two cyclonic circulations — one over Bihar and the other over Vidarbha — had brought the hope for rain on Friday and Saturday. But the city was spared of downpour, though the sky remained overcast. According to Met officials, the clouds that reached the city sky were of medium height and the absence of convection caused little rain. “For now there is no weather system that can bring rain in the city,” said Das.
With the dry and cold northwesterly reaching the city from Sunday evening onwards, the mercury could touch down the 13°C mark by Monday and go slightly further by about a degree on Tuesday.
