ALLAHABAD: UP Congress on Saturday launched ‘Kisan Jan Jagran’ campaign to connect with farmers at village and block level across the district.
Senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said, “The state government is anti-farmers and does not have an effective policy for farmers. Despite assurances of doubling the income of farmers, they are not being provided right value for their produce. As a result, farmers are migrating to cities due to rise in prices of electricity, fertilizers and seed.”
"Congress has chalked out an elaborate plan to reach out to farmers. Party workers will visit the houses of at least 20 farmers every day,” he said. The campaign will continue till March 31.
“GDP has declined to 4-5% in second quarter of fiscal year while average GDP was 8-13% during the Congress rule between 2004 and 2014,” he said.
Tiwari alleged that BJP governments at the Centre and in UP were cheating farmers in the name of crop insurance scheme. "The number of registration of farmers for crop insurance scheme has been declining every year. Other factors like low agriculture export, rise of fertilizer and irrigation prices, stray cattle menace and unemployment have compounded the woes of farmers,” he said.
