Reality Check: India suffer first series defeat post World Cup
Updated: February 9, 2020 8:34:51 am- 1 / 11
New Zealand exorcised the ghost of a nightmarish T20 whitewash with a series-clinching 22-run victory against India in the second ODI on Saturday as the visitors paid the price for poor shot selection. Revenge, as they say, is a dish best served cold and on a chilly Auckland night, New Zealand defended a total of 273 by restricting India to 251 in 48.3 overs taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Put in to bat, New Zealand got off to a positive start as Martin Guptill (79) and Henry Nicholls (41) put on 93 runs for the first wicket. The breakthrough came only in the 17th over as Yuzvendra Chahal trapped Nicholls LBW.(AP Photo)

However, Ross Taylor then went on to complete his half-century off 61 balls, while debutant Kyle Jamieson threw his bat around to smack a four and two sixes to bring up their 50-partnership off 35 balls, which helped the hosts post a stiff 273/8 on the board. (AP Photo)

In response, the inexperienced pair of Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw had a second successive poor day. (AP Photo)

Tim Southee despite running temperature (2/41 in 10 overs) was brilliant with the new ball as his incutter got rid of Virat Kohli. (AP Photo)

Shreyas Iyer did manage to score a half-century, while wickets kept tumbling at the other end. However, it was poor shot selection from the right-handed batsman, which saw him return to the pavilion on 52, leaving India hanging on 129/6 in 27.3 overs. (Source: Twitter/BCCI)

However, Navdeep Saini's surprise knock of 45 from 49 balls, who went on to add a a 76-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the eighth wicket raised visions of pulling off an improbable win. (AP Photo)
