PATNA: Police arrested Sujit Kumar, owner of Shivam Jewellers at Jai Ram Bazaar in Khagaul for cooking up a story of jewellery loot worth Rs60-70 lakh from his shop on February 4 to claim insurance money.
Patna SSP Upendra Kumar Sharma said on Saturday that Sujit had concocted the robbery story to claim insurance amount of Rs60-70 lakh. Upendra said Sujit himself cut the wires of CCTV cameras and dumped the wires into the garbage. “At that time there was only 50 grams of gold and silver jewellery in his shop, which is still there. Later, he called the police and alleged that jewellery worth Rs60-70 lakh were stolen from his shop,” he said.
“After three consecutive days of intensive investigation, the police did not find any evidence related to the robbery. Later, we also checked several footages of the CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity, but could not see anyone entering the shop during the period mentioned by him,” he said.
The SSP said Khagaul police got to know from reliable sources that Sujit had taken huge loan and couldn’t repay the debt. “When the police quizzed him, he kept changing his statement about the robbery. After the police showed the evidence, the shopowner accepted that he faked the jewellery loot story,” Upendra said.
A case under Sections 420 (cheating), 466 (forgery) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of IPC has been lodged against the jeweller.
