Researchers found that 13 per cent of deaths occurring during or up to one year after pregnancy among Louisiana women in 2016-17 were homicides. Pooja Mehta, M.D., clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, was also a member of a research team. The results were published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. The team conducted a retrospective analysis of vital records data provided by the Louisiana Department of Health of all cases of maternal death that year. Of the 119 maternal deaths, homicide accounted for more deaths than any other single cause.
