VIJAYAWADA: The VIII additional sessions court in
Nellore on Thursday convicted a man in the sensational double murder case of 2013 and sentenced him to death. The convict, Shaik Imtiaz, a carpenter by profession, along with two others had murdered a medical student and her mother, and severely injured her father at Haranathapuram area in Nellore town in February 2013. The death penalty, incidentally, comes a week before the seventh death anniversary of the victims.
Judge B Satyanarayana, who heads the court that deals with crimes against women, observed that the case was indeed the rarest of the rare crimes while pronouncing the death sentence.
The two other accused in the double murder case were juveniles, who are already serving a three-year sentence delivered by a juvenile court in 2018.
According to the case details, the murder for gain took place on February 12, 2013. The main convict, along with the two juvenile delinquents, killed the final year medical student and her mother for money. Imtiaz was employed for interior works by A Dinakar Reddy, owner of Vagdevi pharmacy college in the town.
The accused, while working at Dinakar’s bungalow, saw the gold ornaments worn by his wife Shakunthala, 45, and daughter Bhargavi, 20, who was doing her MBBS at Narayana medical college. After gaining entry into the house on the day of the crime, they first hacked Shakunthala to death. When Bhargavi came out of her room on hearing the commotion, they threatened her to hand over the keys of the iron safe. After taking the keys they killed Bhargavi too.
But before they could escape with the money and jewels, Dinakar’s sister-in-law came there to invite the family for a wedding. After getting no response despite repeatedly pressing the calling bell, she looked through the window and saw blood splattered everywhere. She also saw the accused walking around with the blood-stained weapons and immediately raised an alarm. Dinakar, who reached the house before the police, impulsively broke open the door and was stabbed by the main accused. Soon, the police also reached the place and arrested the culprits. Dinakar was rushed to the hospital and managed to survive the attack.
